Disaster Preparedness Training
Participating in disaster and survival preparedness training online or in workshops is an excellent way to learn how to protect yourself and your family during a disaster. You will also learn how best to help your neighbors and community during a large disaster. Disaster and survival preparedness training will help you respond quickly and effectively to do the most good for the most people, and reduces anxiety knowing you were prepared to handle difficult situations. Below are few opportunities to obtain disaster and survival preparedness training:
The American Red Cross www.redcross.org
Founded in 1881, the American Red Cross is the nation’s premiere emergency preparedness and response organization offering domestic disaster relief. The Red Cross also offers courses for first aid and CPR which are critical skills to have in an emergency. Many local chapters will also conduct free disaster preparedness training at your workplace, community center, or school. Contact your local Red Cross to obtain information for taking this type of emergency preparedness training in your community.
The Bay Area Red Cross www.bayarea-redcross.org
The Bay Area Red Cross offers two excellent online tutorials on emergency and disaster preparedness as shown below. You can access their site and tutorials by clicking on the images below.
CERT https://www.citizencorps.gov/cert/
CERT, The Community Emergency Response Team, is an excellent way to gain emergency preparedness training as well as volunteer in local emergency and disaster preparedness and relief efforts. CERT members receive 20 hours of classroom instruction that teaches basic disaster survival preparedness skills to help their family and their neighbors until help arrives from disaster relief agencies. Skills taught include: light search and rescue, team organization, fire safety, and disaster preparedness, psychology and medical operations. Sponsored by local governments and FEMA, CERT volunteers provide immediate direct assistance to victims, and work with relief agencies and disaster officials to support relief efforts when they arrive at the site.
