The 2008 tornado season is on track to set a record for the number of tornadoes in the USA, according to National Weather Service data. Through July, 1,390 tornadoes were officially recorded in the first seven months of a year — the most ever. The annual record for tornadoes in the USA is 1,817, set in 2004. "This year, every month has been above average for tornadoes," says Greg Forbes, of the Weather Channel.

Hurricane Gustav has become a very dangerous Category 4 hurricane with maximum sustained winds near 145 mph. Gustav will be swirling over western Cuba very shortly and into the southeastern Gulf of Mexico tonight. The eye of Gustav expected to pass over western Cuba this evening. Additional strengthening is likely.

The tropical Atlantic remains very active as we move into the peak of the hurricane season. Tropical Storm Gustav continues to impact Jamaica, bringing heavy rain and flash flooding, tropical storm force winds, and high surf. As of 11 a.m. EDT, the center of Gustav was centered about 140 miles west-northwest of Kingston, Jamaica, and is moving in a west-northwest direction near 8 mph.

Tropical Storm Fay began moving back inland Thursday afternoon, bringing strong winds and dumping more heavy rain on a state already coping with "catastrophic" and "historic" flooding. While Fay has never reached hurricane intensity, it still wreaked havoc as it stalled near the central coast causing extensive flooding, particularly in Brevard County.

A 5.4 magnitude earthquake shook Southern California on Tuesday morning. The quake was felt hundreds of miles away, including San Diego, Las Vegas and Santa Barbara.
Buildings throughout the region swayed and rocked during the quake. It struck at 11:42 a.m., and was centered about three miles from Chino Hills in San Bernardino County and 28 miles from the Los Angeles Civic Center.

This year's fire season started early and predictions are for above average activity in the West due to one of the driest springs on record. Already firefighters have been deployed to a dozen wildfires in California including a massive fire in Santa Cruz that that scorched 4,000 acres and destroyed 31 homes. The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) predicts an above normal hurricane season with up to 16 named storms and 8 hurricanes and 5 major hurricanes of Category 3 or higher. A "normal" season consists of up to 11 named storms and 2 major hurricanes. The team predicts 69% chance at least 1 major hurricane will make landfall on the U.S. coast. More than 20 people were killed Saturday evening as a strong line of severe storms and tornadoes rushed across the mid-South, destroying and damaging hundreds of homes and leaving a wide path of destruction in its wake.
Some of the worst damage, and most of the deaths, were reported in northeastern Oklahoma and southwestern Missouri. It was the deadliest tornado outbreak in Oklahoma since May 3, 1999, when 44 people were killed...

At least 27 people were injured and widespread damage was reported Friday night when an F2 tornado tore a six mile path, 200 yards wide across Atlanta. Severe thunderstorms with baseball size hail and tornadoes also damaged communities across northern Georgia Saturday. At least three people were killed.
