Emergency and Disaster Preparedness, Survival Kits, Tips, and Tools – Ready Nation

Stay Informed to Local Disaster News - Include These Resources in Your Family Emergency Plan

During disasters, disaster response officials urge the public to stay informed through official news sources for the best advice and news should a disaster strike. Below is a list of recommendations to help you stay informed.

  • Ask local emergency officials about their emergency response plans and their methods to warn and inform your community. They can usually be found on their website or by calling your City Hall. Tune into your local emergency station or communication system during an emergency. Keep this information documented in your Family Emergency Plan. Use ReadyNation™ online Family Emergency Plan tool to create your family’s custom emergency plan if you have not done so already.
  • Listen to the national EMERGENCY ALERT SYSTEM (EAS) – The EAS can address the nation on short notice in case of grave threat or national emergency. Most local radio and TV stations participate in broadcasting EAS announcements and participate in their community's emergency response plan. As part of your Family Emergency Plan, purchase a NOAA battery operated and or hand powered weather radio receiver to ensure you can access this information when needed if you are without power.
  • Review these federal and organizational websites that contain additional information and and include their support and advice in your Family Emergency Plan:
